How to Wash Jeans and Bras Without Damaging Them
Jeans can usually handle more wear between washes than a bra, but neither benefits from being forgotten at the bottom of the laundry basket. The trick is to match the wash to the garment: denim needs help keeping its colour, while bras need protection from stretching and snagging.
The short answer: check the care labels, wash jeans inside out in cold water when permitted, and hand-wash delicate bras. If a bra is machine washable, fasten it inside a mesh bag and choose a gentle cycle. Air-dry both when practical.
Start with the label, not a laundry hack
Two pairs of jeans can need different treatment. Stretch denim, raw denim and embellished styles are not interchangeable. Bras vary too: moulded cups, lace, silk and removable pads may have their own instructions. A machine’s “hand wash” setting does not override a garment label that says to wash by hand.

How to wash jeans without unnecessary fading
- Decide whether they need a full wash. Wash when they are dirty, sweaty or smell. For a small mark on otherwise fresh jeans, spot-clean gently with a damp cloth and a suitable detergent, following its instructions. Test an inconspicuous area first.
- Prepare the pair. Empty the pockets, turn the jeans inside out and close zips. Sort by colour; new dark denim deserves particular care around pale clothing.
- Choose a gentle wash. If the label permits, use cold water and a gentle cycle. Measure detergent for the load rather than adding extra “just in case”.
- Dry with care. Take the jeans out promptly, smooth them into shape and hang them in a ventilated place out of strong sunlight. Check the label before tumble drying.
Levi’s recommends cold, gentle washing and turning denim inside out. Choose a spin setting suitable for the garment and your machine; there is no universal one-minute spin rule.
How to hand-wash a bra
Hand washing gives you more control over delicate cups and trim. Use a clean basin, cool water and a mild laundry detergent suitable for the fabric, measured according to the product instructions.
- Submerge the bra and gently work the soapy water through the fabric. Give the underband and areas that touch your skin some attention, without scrubbing delicate lace.
- Allow a short soak if the care instructions permit, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
- Press out water gently with a clean towel. Avoid twisting or wringing the bra.
- Reshape the cups and lay the bra flat to air-dry with good airflow.
Skip fabric softener, and keep bras out of the tumble dryer unless the manufacturer specifically allows it. A quick rinse in the shower is not a substitute for washing with detergent.
Can you put a bra in the washing machine?
Yes, if its care label allows it. Close the hooks, place the bra in a mesh lingerie bag and wash with compatible delicate items. Choose the recommended temperature and a gentle cycle. The bag helps reduce tangling and friction, but it cannot make a hand-wash-only bra machine safe.
Keep heavy jeans out of that delicate load. Washing the two separately also makes it easier to manage denim dye transfer. After washing, reshape the bra and air-dry it.
How often should you wash them?
Use wear conditions as your guide. Jeans worn briefly indoors may not need washing as often as a pair worn for a sweaty day outside. Everyday bras can need washing after a few wears, sooner when sweaty or visibly dirty. Wash sports bras after sweaty exercise and follow their specific care instructions.
Before putting either garment away, make sure it is completely dry. For the rest of your workout laundry, see our guide to washing gym clothes.
Common questions
Do bras always need two rinse cycles?
No. The aim is to remove detergent residue, not reach a fixed rinse count. Use the correct dose and rinse again if residue remains.
Is cold water wrong for jeans?
No. Cold water is a common denim-care recommendation. Check the label for exceptions, especially for unusual finishes.
Does a mesh bag replace hand washing?
No. It helps protect machine-washable delicates; it does not change the care requirements of the fabric or construction.
